The Mississippi Coast: A Fine Tradition of Gaming and Entertainment

Gambling and partying along the Mississippi Gulf Coast is centuries old. Early inhabitants of the region‌, including the Choctaw and Chickasaw Indians, gambled regularly. When the Europeans and Africans arrived, they brought cards and billiards. In the 1790s when Mississippi was a Spanish territory, residents built the Fleetfield Horse Race Track in Natchez. Just like today, many early 19th-century travelers went to the Mississippi Coast on the Gulf of Mexico to enjoy its mild weather and lavish resorts. Early tourist destinations in Biloxi included the Magnolia Hotel, the Nixon Hotel, Madame Pradat’s, and the Shady Grove Hotel. Schooner races were also popular along the Gulf.

During the Great Depression of the 1930s, gambling was viewed as a way to bolster the economy, especially along the Gulf Coast. By 1950, the opening of U.S. Highway 90, increased travel along the Coast. In nightclubs lining Highway 90, Hollywood entertainers performed nightly, drawing big crowds along “The Mississippi Strip.” On June 29, 1990, the Mississippi Legislature passed the Mississippi Gaming Control Act, allowing gambling in counties along the Mississippi River and the Gulf Coast, as long as the voters approved.

Build A Nice Career on the Gulf Coast

In 1992, the Isle of Caprice Casino opened in Biloxi, followed by other casinos, but then in 2005, Hurricane Katrina wiped out the Gulfport and Biloxi casinos. Today, after rebuilding, legalized gambling exists in Neshoba, Tunica, Washington, Adams, Warren, Hancock, and Harrison counties. There are about thirty gaming properties along the Gulf Coast and Mississippi River, with a dozen on the Gulf Coast.

Biloxi and Gulfport, Mississippi (which are 13 miles apart) are filled with visitors flocking to the many casinos, resturants, bars, tourist attractions, golf courses, beaches, and fishing spots on the coast. Some of the most popular Mississippi Gulf Coast casinos include: Beau Rivage, Harrah's, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, the Golden Nugget, and Island View. The whole area is an affordable place to live - a great place for bartenders and casino dealers to call home. Getting training by an accredited school has never been easier.

Our Gulfport campus is ideally located just a couple of blocks from the beach area and minutes from all the local casinos. The facility is approximately 7,800 square feet. Parking is available in front, on the side, and in the rear of the building. To better facilitate our programs, the labs simulate the actual workplace and a re complete, featuring two full-size bars with eight work stations each, and a gaming lab featuring 17 regulation size tables.
