The Anise Notes of the Obituary Cocktail

The Birth of the Obituary Cocktail

At the corner of Bourbon Street and St. Philip Street in the French Quarter, stands one of the oldest surviving structures in New Orleans, Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar. It was constructed in the early 18th century and still remains running as one of the oldest bars in the US. Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop is also home to a classic New Orleans cocktail called the Obituary Cocktail.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, America’s ultimate cocktail, the martini, began to burst onto the bartending scene. Laffite’s Blacksmith Shop decided they would add a little New Orleans flair, and absinthe, to the mix and called it the Obituary Cocktail. Many consider the name a warning because of the concentration of absinthe in the drink, but when made correctly it is a fantastic, classic cocktail.
